Today is The Day of Silence, the day that attempts to bring attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence today echoes that silence, which is caused by the anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment.
I understand why people don't agree with equal rights for LGBT people, I just can't, no matter how hard I think about it, understand why ANYONE would be so cruel, no matter who the person is. All people deserve to be able to love the people that they love, regardless of how you feel about it. It isn't someone else's job to tell me or anyone who I can or cannot fall in love with. It isn't right to tell someone that they are going to hell because they don't feel like they identify with their biological gender. It isn't okay to call someone derogatory names and beat them up just because they are who they are. I believe that ending the silence that LGBT's are faced with is the first step toward building awareness and making a commitment to address these injustices. Think about the voices you DIDN'T hear today.
I get it, if someone is being a douche I can maybe see becoming verbally mean to them as minorly justified (even though you probably still shouldn't), but UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES is it okay to be verbally or physically abusive to a perfectly wonderful person SOLEY BASED ON SEXUAL PREFERENCE OR IDENTITY. We live in a society that accepts bullying, that accepts, discrimination, and that accepts that millions of members of the LGBT community are vigorously persecuted in countries around the world. Think about it. We are society. We are the people that allow for every punch, every hurtful word, every tear. We are the people that are responsible for change. We are the people that can stand up for discrimination, and it starts with you. It starts now. You are the person that can tip the scales, save a life. It's up to you. Will you join us?
